eMachines Named No. 3 Desktop PC Vendor Sep 2, 2003

eMachines, Inc. was named the No. 3 vendor of desktop PC units in the U.S. for Q2 2003 in a report released by IDC—a jump from the research firm's previous quarterly report, which ranked eMachines No. 4. According to IDC's "Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker September 2003", eMachines is ranked behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard, but in front of Gateway, Apple, and Sony in overall U.S. desktop PC sales last quarter. Unlike its industry competition, eMachines said it sells virtually all of its PCs through the retail channel with less than 1 percent sold online.

eMachines reportedly sold more than 356,000 desktop PCs from April to June of this year. The research firm also reports that eMachines' U.S. desktop PC retail market share has risen by more than 11.5 percentage points to 27 percent from 2001 to Q2 2003.

Based on the strength of eMachines' recent success and current business model, Wayne Inouye, president and CEO of eMachines, expects the company to attain U.S. $1 billion in revenue by fiscal year-end.
