The Electric Motor Education and Research Foundation (EMERF), a 501(c)(3) foundation of SMMA-The Motor and Motion Association, announced that it will conduct a workshop on its lamination steels database Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, in Nashville, TN, U.S. The workshop, "Combining the EMERF Lamination Steels Database with Motor Simulation Programs," will meet at the Sheraton Music City Hotel from 1:00 to 5:00 pm prior to the start of the SMMA 2003 Fall Technical Conference, "New Technologies for the Motors and Drives Industry," Nov. 5-7, 2003, also at the Sheraton Music City Hotel.

The workshop will include an overview of the EMERF database for soft iron and steels used in electric motors. According to SMMA, the data, available on the EMERF Lamination Steels, Second Edition CD, provides an additional tool for more accurate motor design. Magnetic saturation (first quadrant) curves and core loss curves are included. The EMERF data, combined with PC-BDC, a SPEED brushless permanent magnet motor design program, illustrates the basics of precision motor design, said the association. The workshop will also cover the selection and evaluation process for soft irons, steels, and permanent magnets, as they pertain to overall motor performance.

Instructors for the workshop are Daniel B. Jones, president, Incremotion Associates Inc., and Steve Sprague, sales manager, Proto Laminations Inc. The workshop is open to SMMA members and prospective members, with discounted registration for SMMA member company employees and multiple registrants from the same company.

To register for the EMERF workshop or to obtain additional information, call 508/979-5935, fax 508/979-5845, email info@smma.org, or visit the SMMA web site, www.smma.org.
