APPLIANCE magazine traveled to Chicago, IL, U.S. to report on the National Hardware Show, held Aug. 10-12, and found that some small appliance makers are moving into the thermoelectric cooler and warmer market. The cooler/warmer is a portable appliance for use in boats, cars, offices, dorm rooms, on camping trips, and other locations where space is at a premium. The appliance provides hot and cold storage for pop, sandwiches, wine, and other food items.

Two companies that featured the appliances at the show were Princess International Inc. and Zhongshan Haika Electric Appliances Co., Ltd.

Princess offers several models ranging in size from 12 to 17 L. According to the company, both units can cool to 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) and warm to 149 degrees F (65 degrees C). The units come with a 110-V adapter for the home or office and a 12-V adapter for a car, RV, or boat. The company also plans to release a 20-L Deluxe Mini Fridge later this year. The Mini Fridge features digital temperature control and a large LCD readout.

The cooler/warmer products available from Zhongshan have capacities ranging from 4 to 24 L and have energy consumption of 59 W a.c. cooling (39 W d.c.) and 53 W a.c. heating (32 W d.c.). According to the company, the products cool to 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) below ambient temperature and heat up to 65 degrees C (149 degrees F).

The offerings from both companies feature CFC-free polyurethane foam lining.
