NTT DoCoMo Inc. posted a group net profit of 196.82 billion yen (U.S. $1.65 billion) for the April-June quarter on sales of 1.25 trillion yen, company officials said Thursday.

It is the first time that the mobile phone firm has disclosed its quarterly earnings, so no comparable data are available.

Shiro Tsuda, DoCoMo's senior executive vice president, said the results are satisfactory. The launch of new handsets for the company's second-generation and FOMA third-generation wireless services helped boost the number of subscribers and data traffic, he said.

"Our competitors are catching up with us with attractive handsets," Mr. Tsuda said. "We've got to reinforce FOMA services."

There were some 535,000 subscribers to DoCoMo's FOMA service as of June 30, up from 115,000 a year earlier. DoCoMo hopes to have 1.46 million subscribers by the end of this fiscal year.

As of June 30, there were 44.36 million subscribers to DoCoMo's cell phone services including FOMA, edging up 7 percent from a year earlier. The number of subscribers to its i-mode wireless Internet service grew 15.4 percent from a year earlier to 38.65 million.

Average monthly revenue per unit (ARPU) from second-generation cell phone users came to 8,040 yen ($67.57) in the quarter, down from 8,150 yen in the same period last year. FOMA users' ARPU was 9,610 yen in the period, up from 7,800 yen.

DoCoMo's consolidated operating profit for the first quarter was 337.03 billion yen ($2.83 billion) and pretax profit was 336.89 billion yen. (The Japan Times)
