U.S. consumer plans to purchase homes, major appliances and carpets were down in June as confidence in the U.S. economy remained flat.
The Conference Board reported that only 3 percent of consumers say they now plan to buy a new home, compared with 3.4 percent in May and 3.8 percent in June last year.
Likewise, plans to purchase major appliances fell to 28.2 percent in June, down from both the previous month and June 2002.
In releasing its monthly consumer confidence measure, the board noted that
respondents to its household poll are primarily concerned about the present state of the U.S. economy.
But the picture is mixed. For example, fewer consumers than last year say business conditions are good, and many more say jobs are hard to get. But more also expect conditions to improve in the next 6 months. (HFN) Back
