Room air-conditioners again were the story as U.S. manufacturers’ shipments of major appliances grew 15.9 percent in June. The seven core categories increased 6.0 percent, but room air-shot up 59.0 percent to 1,598,900 units. For the year to date, the category increased 46.0 percent to 7,515,900; the record is 6,496,400 in 2000.
Total shipments in the 5 weeks ending June 28 were 8,366,300, second only to the 8,718,000 units that moved this March. The previous June standard was 7,311,800 in 2000; last year was 7,216,100. Through 6months, core categories were down 0.4 percent, but total shipments were up 8.2 percent to 38,459,800 appliances. Last year was the industry’s biggest at 67,922,300 units.
Among core categories in June, electric cooking was up 1.2 percent. Gas cooking, washers, dryers, and dishwashers were virtually flat. Refrigerators and freezers dipped 1.8 and 0.7 percent, respectively.
Other categories included microwave ovens, up 3.5 percent, and dehumidifiers, up 52.5 percent. The latter is running ahead 49.1 percent for the year at 894,100 units. The dehumidifier record is 1,059,000 in 1994. (HFN)
