New Zealand Appliance Retailers Use Energy Labels Mar 10, 2003

New Zealand appliance retailers appear to be getting the message about energy consumption labels. The labels have been mandatory for whiteware products since last April.

A survey by the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority has found an average of 88 percent of appliances for sale now carry the sticker. That compares with 78 percent in Australia, where the labels have been mandatory for more than a decade.

Authority chief executive Heather Staley says the result of the latest survey is a big improvement on last year's figure of just 63 percent. Energy rating labels have to be displayed on refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and other white goods. (IRN)
