Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), based in Northbrook, IL, U.S., promoted Robert A. Williams to Director of Standards effective Feb. 1, 2003. He is the first to serve in this new position.
Mr. Williams joined UL, one of the world's foremost product safety testing organizations, in 1973. He is responsible for coordinating UL's Standards operations worldwide. He also has managerial responsibilities for UL's Standards Department, International Standards activities, and Domestic Standards Committee activity. Mr. Williams will report to Ted Hall, UL's senior vice president and chief technical officer.
"UL's presence globally in standards development activities is key to UL," says Mr. Hall. "For 30 years, Bob has played an integral role in UL's public safety mission and will continue to do so in his new position as he works to identify trends and opportunities in standardization and establish strategic operating plans and objectives for expanding the global impact of UL's Standards operations."
UL has developed more than 880 Standards for Safety for products ranging from armored cable to electrical household apparatus. "UL's Standards for Safety and UL's Standards development process must respond to the global market place. UL continues to focus on its public safety mission by participating in international standards activities and actively pursuing harmonization with international standards," says Mr. Williams. "These activities seek to provide safe products to the global marketplace and global market access for UL's customers."
