SonyEricsson Still Expects Rise In Handset Shipments

SonyEricsson said it remains optimistic that industry shipments of mobile phones will grow by at least 10 percent this year to roughly 435 million, the executive vice president of the handset maker said.

Speaking at the 3GSM World Congress, Jan Waereby downplayed the threat of an industry inventory buildup coming out of the 2002 Christmas sales period - something several larger handset makers have said could pinch first-quarter industry sales.

"My overall assessment is that inventory is a much smaller issue this year compared to last year," Mr. Waereby said.

Earlier, SonyEricsson said it would begin shipments of its first WCDMA third-generation handset in the second half of 2003.

At a news conference, company executives said the Z1010 would likely be priced similarly to the P800 smart phone, which retails for about EUR750, unsubsidized.

The dual mode UMTS/GSM-GPRS mobile phone features two inbuilt cameras, two displays, video support and a host of other features.

However, the handset doesn't include an operating system from Symbian PLC , the British software maker in which SonyEricsson owns a stake.

Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc., who are also shareholders in Symbian, didn't include Symbian software in their first 3G mobile handsets either. (Dow Jones)
