Total shipments of digital cameras at home and abroad by Japanese manufacturers eclipsed those of conventional film cameras in 2002 for the first time, according to statistics compiled by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). Digital camera shipments totaled 24.55 million units for all of 2002, up 66.4 percent from the year before, compared with film camera shipments of 23.66 million units, down 14.3 percent, the CIPA said.
