AK Steel said that all of its steel operations have been awarded
certificates of registration under ISO 14001 for environmental management systems. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO 14001 is a set of voluntary standards based on international consensus among environmental experts. ISO 14001 standards are management tools that enable an organization to control the impact of its activities, products or services on the environment, according to the organization.
The company's Ashland, Kentucky Works reportedly became the first U.S. integrated steel plant to receive the registration in
2001. Since then, AK Steel's steel plants in Middletown, Coshocton, Mansfield, and Zanesville, OH, U.S.; Butler, PA, U.S.; Rockport, IN and its steel tube subsidiary AK Tube in Walbridge, OH, U.S. have all passed independent audits and have been awarded certificates of registration.
"Being certified to the ISO 14001 standard represents AK Steel's commitment to compliance with existing environmental laws and regulations, as well as our commitment to continual improvement," said Richard M. Wardrop, Jr., chairman and CEO of AK Steel. "The fact that each of our eight
facilities received approval by the registrar with the very first audit speaks highly of that commitment," he said.
