Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson, announced that its Copeland Digital Scroll(TM) technology has received a 2003 AHR Expo Innovation Award for technology innovation in refrigeration equipment. Representatives from Emerson will accept the award on today during the 2003 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) in Chicago, IL, U.S.

The award recognizes Emerson for giving refrigeration equipment manufacturers a new compressor technology that continuously adjusts cooling power to precisely maintain the desired temperature and humidity level. Digital scroll compressor technology is said to be ideal for commercial refrigeration applications where temperature control, energy efficiency, and equipment reliability are important.

"We're honored and proud to accept this award on behalf of Emerson Climate Technologies," said Ed Purvis, president of Emerson's Copeland refrigeration division. "The Copeland Digital Scroll compressor represents a commitment by Emerson to take scroll technology to a whole new level of performance for our customers. We believe the benefits of Emerson's digital scroll will lead to the adoption of modulation technology in a wide range of commercial equipment in the years ahead."

Warren Beeton, vice president of engineering for Copeland's refrigeration division, will accept the award on behalf of Emerson at the AHR Expo.

According to Emerson, Copeland Digital Scroll is the first scroll compressor with a built-in capability to adjust its cooling power from 10 percent to 100 percent. Emerson predicts that offering a simpler way to automatically adjust, or modulate, a compressor's cooling capability will lead to more widespread application of systems with part-load capacity operation, and also accelerate integration of the compressor with more sophisticated components, such as variable-speed motors, electronic valves, and programmable controls.

Emerson first introduced Copeland Digital Scroll compressors in Asia in 2001, in partnership with Samsung Electronics. The product is now well established in the Korean market, with more than 15,000 Samsung DVM(TM) air-conditioning systems containing Copeland Digital Scroll.

Emerson is also marketing Copeland Digital Scroll technology for use in industrial air dryers and refrigerated transport containers, with future plans to expand the technology applications to meet the demands of other commercial air conditioning and refrigeration users, including for the retail, supermarket and precision air industries.

The AHR Expo Innovation Awards are jointly sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI); and International Exposition Company (IEC). The winners were selected from among the products submitted by AHR Expo exhibitors in seven categories: Heating; Cooling; Refrigeration; Ventilation; Indoor Air Quality; Energy; and Instruments, Tools and Software.
