Sony PlayStation 2 Shipments Top 50 million Jan 16, 2003

Japanese company Sony Corp. said on Thursday that shipments of its PlayStation 2 game console have topped 50 million.

The sales mark was achieved 14 months earlier than the original PlayStation and out-sold Nintendo Co Ltd.'s GameCube and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox.

Global shipments of PlayStation 2 -- which debuted on March 4, 2000 in Japan -- stood at 50.03 million units as of Jan. 15, said Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), a wholly owned Sony subsidiary that makes and markets the console.

By region, 12.53 million consoles were sold in Japan, 21.48 million in North America, and 16.02 million in Europe.

Last week, SCE said it had sold 8.5 million during the key shopping season in November and December, up 24 percent from a year earlier. (Reuters)
