Sharp to Boost Capital Spending Jan 9, 2003

Japan's Sharp Corp. said it would boost capital spending in the business year starting on April 1 by 20 percent from this year, to 178 billion yen (U.S. $1.49 billion). Sharp President Katsuhiko Machida also said the company was on track to achieve its earnings targets for the current business year, which called for a consolidated net profit of 37 billion yen ($310.6 million) on two trillion yen ($16.8 billion) in revenues. He said the bulk of next year's capital spending, or 108 billion yen ($906.8 million), was targeted for liquid crystal displays. The company has been aggressively expanding output of flat-panel LCD televisions and small screens designed for mobile phones and digital cameras. (Reuters)
