Sony Increases Environmental Efforts Dec 19, 2002

Sony Corp. said it will buy materials and parts only from suppliers that clear its standards for environmental protection, starting in April next year. Sony will send about 600 inspectors to around 4,000 suppliers all over the world to carry out on-site inspections, based on a 64-point check list, in order to determine whether they are using hazardous chemical substances.

While only authorized suppliers will be allowed to do business with Sony, they will have to go through the inspection every 2 years, Sony said. The consumer electronics giant will conduct the same inspection on about 450 companies manufacturing products under the Sony brand. (Kyodo News)
