More than 1,200 triathletes are expected to compete in Benton Harbor, MI, U.S. next September for the inaugural Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon, a half Ironman endurance test that will select qualifiers for North American Ironman events. The Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon is the main event of a three-day athletic festival that is expected to generate more than U.S. $1 million in revenue for businesses in the region.
The Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon will be held on Sunday, Sept. 14, beginning at 8 a.m. at Jean Klock Park. Athletes will face a challenging 1.2-mile swim in Lake Michigan, a 56-mile bike ride through rural Berrien and Van Buren counties, and a 13.2-mile run along the St. Joseph River before finishing the event back at Jean Klock Park. The event will qualify the top participants to enter the Ironman Canada, the Ironman Coeur d'Alene, or the Ironman Florida. Registration for the Whirlpool Steelhead Triathlon opens Feb. 1.
