Dyson, a vacuum cleaner manufacturer, has won the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design GOOD DESIGN Award for 2002 for the DC07 vacuum. The DC07 vacuum cleaner, which was launched this fall in the U.S., is engineered to provide technological advances including the patented Root8Cyclone™ technology that uses powerful centrifugal force to remove more dust and dirt, without losing suction. Other features, such as the quick-draw integrated hose and reversible wand, provide a smooth functional flow that creates a machine that is intuitive and ergonomic to use.

The aesthetic qualities of the Dyson articulate the functions, rather than cover them up. Color and transparency are used to reveal and emphasize the technology of the Dyson vacuum cleaner and materials are chosen for their functional properties. Working parts, such as the cyclones or switches and buttons, are highlighted in a contrasting color and the body of the machine is constructed of strong ABS and polycarbonates, which are both reportedly durable and resilient. The clear bin (said to be the first on the market) exposes the core technology of the vacuum – the eight cyclones – and shows the dirt as it is removed from the air.

Dyson's products are in the permanent collections of numerous major museums including the London Science Museum, the San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Founded in 1950, GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition upon designers and manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product concepts and originality beyond what is considered standard product and consumer design. The GOOD DESIGN Show — the annual exhibition of the Awards — is scheduled to open April 1, 2003 at The Chicago Athenaeum in Chicago, IL, U.S.
