Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said sales rose a modest 2.6 percent in November as consumers started the holiday season by hunting for bargains. In a recorded sales update, Wal-Mart said it expected December sales at stores open at least one year to be up in the range of 3-5 percent. The period, ending Jan. 3, includes the bulk of the holiday shopping season. Total monthly sales at its Wal-Mart discount stores reached U.S. $13.7 billion, up 10.5 percent from a year earlier, while its Sam’s Club warehouse stores recorded sales of $2.6 billion, up 7 percent from the year before. Same-store sales at the Wal-Mart stores were up 2.8 percent for the month, compared with last November’s 4.5 percent gain, while Sam’s same-store sales inched up 1.3 percent, against a 3.3 percent advance in the same month last year.
