With increased demand for sewing machines in Southeast Asian countries, Singer India is increasing exports this year. Against more than 93,000 machines produced in 2001-02, it is working overtime to achieve its target of manufacturing 1,10,000 units this fiscal year. Singer India (SIL) runs two production units in India. Both the units manufacture different models of zig-zag sewing machines which the multi-national appliances company introduced in 1986. B. M. Sharma, general manager of Singer’s Jammu unit, said the company started modest exports in late 1998 and is gradually picking up. (The Economic Times)
