The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) hosted a meeting for the presidents of its North American counterparts, the Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA), and Mexico's Asociacion Nacional de Fabricantes Aparatos Domesticos (ANFAD). The groups' leaders discussed priority issues for the home appliance industry in their respective countries in hopes of working more closely on behalf of their common members. In attendance were Ken Elsey of CAMA, Guillermo Cochran Garza of ANFAD, and Joseph McGuire of AHAM.

CAMA is heavily involved with environmental issues including product packaging disposal and end-of-life recycling issues. ANFAD is closely involved in NOM standards, the official government safety and efficiency standards and the NMX voluntary performance standards. ANFAD spends a considerable amount of time negotiating free trade agreements, including one with Japan, which should be final by 2004. In addition to several regulatory items, energy standards, test procedures, and a manufacturer tax credit for super-efficient appliances will dominate AHAM's agenda for the coming year.

Among other services, the three groups administer industry statistics-reporting programs that publish industry shipment data. The groups agreed to produce a special North American data report using the shipment data from each group. This report can be expected in early spring 2003.
