Ricoh Corporation yesterday filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pitney Bowes Inc. for infringing several Ricoh patents, according to a Business Wire report. Ricoh, along with parent corporation Ricoh Company, Ltd., filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey alleging that Pitney Bowes' business office devices, including its digital mailing machines such as the popular DM200 and DM300 models, infringe valid United States patents held jointly by Ricoh Corporation and Ricoh Company, Ltd.

Ricoh seeks to enjoin Pitney Bowes' current and future infringement and recover compensatory and punitive damages, interest, costs and fees.

Ricoh said its patented technology enables Pitney Bowes' mailing machines subcomponents to be used interchangeably across models, a technology which Ricoh developed. Ricoh currently licenses its technology to several major business office device companies, and this is said to enable the efficient functioning of business office devices commonly found in many of America's offices.

Ricoh said it spent more than a decade patenting and developing its technology in anticipation of the growing market for interoperability in business office devices and Pitney Bowes is seeking to piggyback on this proprietary technology and appropriate Ricoh's business opportunities. Ricoh is asking the court to prevent that from continuing to happen and intends to maintain the strength of its patent portfolio through vigorous enforcement of Ricoh's patent rights.

Ricoh Corporation is headquartered in West Caldwell, NJ, U.S. It is a subsidiary of Ricoh Company Ltd., a 66-year-old leading supplier of office automation equipment and electronics, with fiscal year 2001 sales in excess of $14 billion.
