First introduced in North America 50 years ago, the electric fireplace has evolved within the last decade from fluttering paper set against the background of a glowing light bulb to a sophisticated and modern appliance that actually provides a real "fire." Electric fireplaces today feature flickering flames, authentic logs, glowing embers and remote control options, as well as enough heat to warm a 400 sq ft space, according to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA).
With more than 44 percent growth from the third quarter of 2001 to 2002, the electric hearth is now the fireplace category growth leader. Electric fireplaces are especially popular with people living in condos and apartments and those who make their homes in climates with the potential for warmer temperatures, the association says.
