General Electric Co. introduced a line of washers and dryers aimed at competing in the high-end laundry-care market. The line, which is produced under the GE Profile name, is designed to be "bigger, faster, and gentler" than any of GE's other washer and dryer models, according to Cynthia Fanning, marketing manager for clothes care for GE's Louisville, KY, U.S.-based Consumer Products Division. The washers will be produced at Appliance Park in Louisville. Although the line won't create any immediate new positions, Randy Payton, president of the union that represents GE workers, said the company's investment in the Louisville plant solidifies the company's commitment to the facility. The new line also could lead to additional jobs as demand rises, he said.

GE invested U.S. $8 million in technology and infrastructure in Louisville, including about $3 million for a new line to produce "king-size" stainless steel baskets for the washing machines. The total investment for the 3-year project to develop the line is about $16 million. The new dryers will be produced by a GE subsidiary in Canada, according to Keen Taylor, an engineering manager at Appliance Park. Mr. Taylor said the company is planning initially to produce about 60,000 of the GE Profile washers per year. The washers, which will be available nationwide on Dec. 1, will retail for between $699-$749. The dryers will sell for $599-$649. (Business First)
