Whirlpool Corp. is hiring 150 to 180 workers as a Marion, OH, U.S. plant reaches record production levels and prepares to manufacture its 4 millionth dryer.

The facility is restarting a second-shift dryer line it stopped at the end of May that resulted in a voluntary layoff of about 50 people, said Steve Winkler, human resources director at the plant. New workers needed will be hired through a temporary employee service. "Basically that's how all our employees are hired before becoming full-time," said Cathy Gerber, Whirlpool spokeswoman.

She said the plant is hiring because of new customer orders from multiple sources, which will take the facility to its highest production levels since it opened in the 1950s. She declined to say who made the orders. The plant's biggest customers are Sears and Lowe's Home Improvement. Best Buy is another customer. Company officials expect the plant to manufacture its 4 millionth dryer in mid-December, Ms. Gerber said.

Reportedly the largest employer in Marion County, Whirlpool has 2,568 hourly employees, including 50-60 temporary workers, and 180 salaried employees, Winkler said. (The Marion Star)
