Godrej Appliances Plans Entry into International Markets May 1, 2003

In a bid to expand its presence beyond India, Godrej Appliances Ltd. (GAL) plans to make a foray into countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe by exporting its products, mainly refrigerators.

Soumitra K. Ghatak, GAL executive vice president of Marketing, Sales, and Service, said, “We plan to extend our focus beyond the domestic market. As part of the global expansion plan, we are currently in talks with a couple of companies in the overseas market. We are evaluating the possibility of selling our products under the Godrej brand name or by any local private name in those countries.”

The company has seven plants across four locations in India, and has planned a strategy to gain the number one position in the refrigerator market in India. It also plans to revamp its air-conditioner business in the coming year. According to the Financial Express, at present, GAL has a presence in the semi-automatic and fully automatic segments. The company also plans to foray into front-loading washing machines. The company currently provides air-conditioners for heavy user segments and is working on a plan to enter into other categories as well.
