Siemens AG launched five new U.S.-specific mobile phones as part of an aggressive strategy to gain a share of the global system of mobile communications, or GSM, in North America.
Siemens plans to market the A56, M46, C56, CT56, and S56 mobile phones as early as the fourth quarter of this year.
Siemens said in press releases on Monday that U.S. mobile operator Cingular Wireless agreed to buy several types of GSM handsets from Siemens, beginning with the CT56 model in time for this holiday season, and Deutsche Telekom's wireless unit T-Mobile U.S.A. agreed to be the exclusive U.S. provider of Siemen's M46 model. AT&T Wireless Services Inc. is already selling Siemens handsets, Siemens said.
The company also said that The Yankee Group projected the North American GSM market will expand 50 percent to 200 million subscribers by 2006. (Dow Jones)-
