Whirlpool Corp. will add as many as 700 jobs through 2005 at its Fort Smith, AK, U.S. plant as it expands to manufacture a new line of refrigerators, the company announced. The plant, which employs 4,500 now, makes side-by-side refrigerators, trash compactors, and ice makers.
A year ago, Whirlpool added a third shift at its refrigerator line, a move that created 320 jobs. Whirlpool reportedly is the largest employer in Fort Smith. The company will spend about U.S. $40 million to retrofit one of three production lines in the plant. The new jobs will pay between $14.50 and $17.50 an hour, Whirlpool spokeswoman Mona Mendoza said. The company did not release details of the new refrigerator model, which is still under development. (Associated Press)
