Samsung to Build New R&D Center in China in 2nd Half Jun 19, 2003

Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it would start construction of a research and development (R&D) center in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, in the second half of this year.

The overseas center, the second of its kind after one in Texas in the U.S., will mainly develop advanced technology for packaging multiple memory and non-memory chips for mobile phone use, according to company officials.

Although the exact plan is yet to be worked out, the company plans to employ about 10 local researchers at an early stage.

"As we have semiconductor production lines in China, we plan to upgrade technology and tap into a pool of local talent," said a Samsung official.

In April, the Chinese government sanctioned the construction plan, paving the way for Samsung to establish a new foothold of production after Korea and the United States. (Asia Pulse, Yonhap)
