According to information released yesterday, LG Electronics Inc. and its subsidiary, Zenith Electronics Corporation, have signed a license agreement for Sony’s Passage™ technology, which is a cable television platform.
Passage reportedly provides for interoperability among multiple conditional access systems and equipment from multiple vendors. According to the companies, Passage technology will allow LG and Zenith equipment to operate at the same time as other vendor’s equipment on existing digital cable networks.
According to Greg Gudorf, senior vice president, Sony Digital Platform Division of America, the move by LG and Zenith will provide cable operators with more choices, as well as "leveraging existing investments in cable networks and maximizing bandwidth as a foundation to expand services and revenues."
