The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) Friday celebrated the signing of a free trade agreement between the U.S. and Chile by Ambassador Robert Zoellick, the U.S. trade representative, and Soledad Alvear, the Chilean foreign minister. Ambassador Zoellick and Foreign Minister Alvear signed the agreement last week in Miami, FL, U.S.

According to EIA, the U.S./Chile FTA provides significant benefits to the high-tech industry in areas such as regulatory transparency, intellectual property protection, telecommunications market access, and e-commerce development. One of the terms of the agreement is that Chile will eliminate tariffs on 85 percent of imports in key sectors, which, according to EIA, include computers and other information technology equipment.

EIA says that free trade is one of the electronics industry’s highest priorities. According to EIA, U.S. high-tech goods and services exported to Chile totaled U.S. $865 million in 2001. EIA plans to keep American manufacturers on an equal footing as other organizations implement free trade agreements with Chile.
