The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse as the ENERGY STAR Retail Partner of the Year for its outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting and selling energy-efficient products. Lowe's accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.,U.S. on April 15, 2003. Lowe's, a partner in the program since 2001, is being honored for its leadership in promoting products that earn the ENERGY STAR, the mark of environmental protection through energy efficiency. "As the second largest appliance retailer in the country, we at Lowe's believe that our role in promoting ENERGY STAR-qualified products and programs has a significant and positive effect on the environment and the lives of our customers," said Dale Pond, Lowe's senior executive vice president of Merchandising/Marketing. "Lowe's and our 130,000 employees are proud to partner with the ENERGY STAR program and look forward to continuing to provide vital, energy-saving information and products to our customers." According to the EPA, by choosing ENERGY STAR-qualified products, the typical household can save up to 30 percent on their energy bills, or about U.S. $400 a year. In 2001 alone, ENERGY STAR reportedly helped Americans save enough energy to power 10 million homes and reduce the air pollution equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road -- all while saving consumers $6 billion. In February, Lowe's announced its enhanced ENERGY STAR plans for 2003, including a commitment to increase sales of ENERGY STAR-qualified products by 20 percent, plus additional employee training and increased customer education regarding the benefits of ENERGY STAR-qualified products and programs. "Lowe's customers are asking for products that give them value. ENERGY STAR qualified products save consumers money, offer the same or better features as standard models and are good for the environment. To our customers, that is value," said Mr. Pond. The ENERGY STAR Award is given to manufacturers and retailers that successfully promote and deliver ENERGY STAR qualified products, saving consumers money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Award winners are selected from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
