SAS, a provider of business intelligence software and services, presented Maytag Appliances with the 12th annual Enterprise Intelligence Award at the annual meeting of the SAS Users Group International (SUGI) on Monday. The award recognizes Maytag's use of SAS(R) in the development of their Enterprise Warranty Analysis solution, designed to enhance product innovation and quality. One of the ways the appliance maker achieves quality is by collecting data from warranty claims. Until recently, analysis and reporting of warranty data was conducted on a monthly basis by a centralized function. "People need information more than once a month," said Randy Wadle, vice president and business information officer for Maytag Appliances. "If they are working on projects to improve products, they need to know what the customer experience is with that product as soon as possible." In 2001, the company deployed SAS(R) Warranty Analysis, replacing its paper-laden process with an enterprise-wide analytical application. Today, information is updated daily instead of monthly. Reports that once took 30 days to produce now take seconds. Accessing the system via the corporate Intranet, Maytag Appliances' product specialists, engineers, managers, and others can reportedly make product decisions based on near real-time customer feedback. "SAS Warranty Analysis allows us to focus on what we do best," said Dale Reeder, Maytag Services' vice president of operations. "Instead of generating reports, we can spend our time using the knowledge acquired from SAS analytics to develop even better products for our consumers. The speed at which we're making good decisions has increased tremendously." SAS presents its Enterprise Intelligence Awards annually to organizations that have demonstrated productivity gains, cost, or timesavings, or achievement of organization or business goals through the use of SAS software. Awards are given in two categories: commercial and government applications. This year, SAS presented the Enterprise Intelligence Award to two outstanding customers in the commercial category: HP's IPG and Maytag Appliances. The 2003 commercial awards were presented during the opening session of the 28th annual SAS Users Group International conference in Seattle, WA, U.S. that was attended by more than 3,500 SAS customers from around the world. The 2003 government award will be presented at the SAS Public Sector executive event on May 6 in Washington D.C., U.S.
