The European Commission said on Thursday that it will conduct an in-depth probe of General Electric’s proposed U.S. $2.06 billion buy of Instrumentarium because it raises serious competition problems.
GE Medical Systems made the cash offer for Instrumentarium, a Finnish medical equipment maker, in December to bolster its European and U.S. operations.
The Commission said that during its four-month probe it in particular wants to "investigate the impact of the transaction in the market for patient monitors, C-arms—mobile X-ray machines—and mammography equipment bought by hospitals."
The U.S. Justice Department has already decided to make what is called a "second request" in the case, which means it will take months to scrutinize the case closely. Analysts say the problems in the United States are more serious than those in Europe. (Reuters) Back
