Pan-European testing of household appliances is achievable with relatively modest financial resources and over a relatively short time span according to household appliance industry speakers at the ATLETE II Final Conference on June 25, 2014, during the European Union’s Sustainable Energy Week.
The industry told conference participants that regular testing of appliances would also ensure that responsible market operators continue to benefit from a level playing field and fair competition when placing their products on the Single European Market.
ATLETE stands for Appliance Testing for Energy Label & Evaluation. The ATLETE II project started in 2012. The project tested 50 washing machines under independent laboratory conditions to check their compliance to European energy label requirements.
"The project has demonstrated that a coordinated effort by a small and dedicated team is very effective in providing market surveillance authorities with reliable test results," said Paolo Falcioni, project consortium member and Director General of European appliance association CECED. “The project is a good model for checking product compliance inside the European Single Market.”
The project results showed 100% compliance in energy class declaration. Tested appliances showed, on average, 5% less energy consumption than what the manufacturers actually declared.
CECED continues to advocate for stronger pan-European market surveillance activities to ensure that energy labeling requirements continue to be followed.
