The U.S. Census Bureau's advance estimates of unadjusted retail sales by Electronics & Appliance Stores in March 2014 were $7,754 million, compared to $7,890 million in February 2014 and $7,725 million in January 2014. March 2013 unadjusted sales were $7,910 million.

Unadjusted Electronics & Appliance Stores sales in the first quarter of 2014 were $23,369 million, down 1.5% from the first quarter of 2013.

Adjusted Electronics & Appliance Stores sales in March 2014 were $8,226 million, from $8,360 million in February 2014 and $8,325 million in January 2014.

Adjusted Electronics & Appliance Stores sales in March 2013 were $8,285 million.

Many other retailer categories had a better month in March.

"Retail sales increased in most categories and sectors as consumers took to stores to purchase new spring attire and home furnishings in hopeful expectation of warmer weather,” said National Retail Federation President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Sales should continue to remain positive this spring with the approach of Easter and expected tax refunds.”

The Census Bureau's advance estimates of overall adjusted retail sales (not including food services and automobiles) in March 2014 were $386,577 million, compared to February 2014's $382,217 million. Sales in March 2013 were $372,641 million. Unadjusted retail sales in March 2014 were $389,263 million, from February's 2014's $343,122 million. Unadjusted March 2013 retail sales were $379,648 million.

Adjusted estimates are adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes.

“Improving economic conditions and consumer confidence should push consumers to return to spending habits this spring,” NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said. “Consumers released some pent-up demand in March after two consecutive months of harsh winter weather that not only hampered employment opportunities but also retail sales. We remain optimistic that retail sales will continue their positive march this spring.”
