Panasonic Corp. has developed a loudspeaker with a diaphragm made with plant opals extracted from bamboo leaves. It was the first time the industry has used this material to improve sound quality.

The company explained that plant opals (also called plant stones) are amorphous hydrous silicates (SiO2 . nH2O) in plant cells. They have a Mohs hardness of 5-6.5, equivalent to that of opal stones.

The new Bamboo Plant Opal Loudspeaker is engineered to reproduce clear sound with low distortion.

Panasonic has previously used resin containing bamboo fibers and bamboo charcoal, which helped create lightweight and highly rigid diaphragm materials, which help improve acoustic velocity as well as prevent unnecessary resonance

The diaphragm in the new loudspeaker now uses the additional bamboo-derived material—the hard, needle-shaped plant opals in bamboo leaves, resulting in sound with clearness and less distortion compared to the company's existing loudspeakers.
