The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) believes significant changes are needed to a notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR) on residential furnace fan energy standards.

AHRI responded on January 23 to the Department of Energy's NOPR, saying that changes are needed to ensure appropriate energy standards are developed.

AHRI considers the adverse impacts of the proposed fan energy rating (FER) levels to be significant to manufacturers. The organization also believes the proposed FER levels would not be cost-effective to consumers.

AHRI’s letter also highlights concerns with:
• DOE’s rulemaking scope
• test procedures on residential furnace fans
• proposed FER levels
• national energy savings analysis
• repair costs associated with furnace fans
• manufacturer impact analysis
• utility impacts analysis, shipments analysis
• social cost of carbon
