The Department of Energy published its final rule establishing residential furnace fans test procedures.
The new test procedures measure the electrical consumption of electrically powered devices in weatherized and non-weatherized gas, oil, and electric furnaces, as well as in modular blowers to circulate air through ductwork.
The test procedures in the final rule go into effect Feb. 3, 2014. The new procedures must be used to generate any furnace fan efficiency test results presented after July 2, 2014.
The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute expects a final rule on energy conservation standards for residential furnace fans later in 2014. It expects the corresponding compliance date to be in the fall of 2019.
