Global HVAC giant Daikin Industries, Ltd. (Osaka, Japan) reported half-year net sales of 921,574 million yen (approx. USD $8,990 million), up 41.8% from 650,016 million yen in the first half of the previous year. Net income in the 6-month period ending on Sept. 30, 2013, was 58,333 million yen (approx. $570 million), up 547.6% from 9,008 million yen in the first 6 months of the previous fiscal year.
Daikin's Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Equipment business segment saw an overall sales increase of 46.5%, to 835,505 million yen, over the first six months of the previous fiscal year. Operating income increased 110.0% to 85,379 million yen.
In the North American Applied Systems market, amid a difficult demand environment with continued sluggish construction starts in the non-residential field, sales grew in the first half of the current fiscal year, with expanded sales of equipment like chillers and increasing exports to Central and South America.
In the ductless air-conditioner market, sales of both commercial and residential air-conditioning systems increased, with greater market demand for energy-saving equipment and recovery in housing starts. Sales of commercial air-conditioning systems increased thanks to steadily securing orders for public building projects.
Overall sales in the region grew substantially compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year thanks to contributions from sales of residential ducted unitary equipment by the Goodman Group, which has been recently consolidated in Daikin Group.
