Whirlpool Corp.'s new manufacturing facility in Cleveland, TN, achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The facility manufactures premium cooking appliances, including ranges, cooktops, and wall ovens. The location has more than 1.5 million square feet of manufacturing space, as well as a testing lab and distribution center. Whirlpool built the plant to be the largest cooking manufacturing facility in North America, with energy efficiency and technologically advanced manufacturing processes.

Sustainable features and practices incorporated into the facility, built with designer/builder Gray Construction, include:
* Minimized Heat Island Effects: Highly reflective roofing materials help reduce heat island effects and increase the efficiency of HVAC systems. High solar reflective index (SRI) concrete pavement was also installed to minimize the heat island effect and eliminate the generation of greenhouse gases and pollution.
* FSC Certified Wood: Wood used in construction was Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood. The FSC standard incorporates criteria that contribute to long-term health and integrity of forest ecosystems, including sustainable timber harvesting, preserving wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and maintaining soil and water quality.
* Use of Low-VOC Materials: Low-volatile organic compound (VOC) materials, paints, and caulks were used. Offgassing in the interior environment was significantly decreased and the building surpassed requirements for pre-occupancy indoor air quality testing.
* Low-Flow Plumbing: To reduce water use, Gray installed ultra-low-flow plumbing fixtures. Water usage is more than 40% less than a regular baseline building and no potable water is used for irrigation due to a process of rainwater reuse.
* Construction Material Recycling: Construction waste was carefully managed to recycle or reuse materials when possible. More than 20% of the materials used to construct the building were recycled.
* To encourage employees to ride bikes to work, showers were installed in the facility.
* To help decrease vehicle emissions, 72 preferential parking spots were designated and provided for employees driving low-emitting, fuel efficient vehicles and car poolers.
