German appliance maker BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeraete refuted a magazine article that said its voluntary recall of five million dishwashers would cost the company more than $900 million, according to Reuters.

BSH announced the recall on Aug. 30, 2013. An article last week in German magazine Focus put the price tag for the recall at EUR 700 million euros, or about US$925 million.

A BSH spokesman quoted by Reuters said the figure reported by Focus "lacks any foundation." BSH has not, however, said how much it does expect the voluntary recall--which it has termed a Safety Action--to cost the company.

The recall affects certain dishwasher models manufactured between 1999 and 2005. BSH said the affected dishwashers may overheat and rarely pose a risk of fire due to a fault in an electronic component in the control panel.

Affected brands include:
* Balay
* Bosch
* Constructa
* Junker+Ruh
* Lynx
* Neff
* Pitsos
* Siemens

Details about the affected models are on website that BSH put up specifically to provide consumers with information. The site is at:
www.dishcareaction.com

"BSH offers consumers affected by this safety action repair free of charge in all countries," the company said in a statement.

BSH said: "As a precautionary measure the company recommends consumers with an affected dishwasher to only use the appliance under supervision, i.e. when someone is home to supervise its use, until the repair has been undertaken."

The Reuters report said that problems with the dishwashers have been known to some extent for several years but, according to BSH, the assumption was that the dishwasher problems were a result of problems with local electrical grids.
