Chinese appliance and consumer electronics maker Hisense opened a plant to make TVs and refrigerators in South Africa last month, and, according to media reports, is already beginning discussions on more plants in the vicinity.
Media outlet BusinessDay reported comments from Alan Winde, Western Cape Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. Winde said the provincial government is involved in more discussions with Hisense about further investment in the region.
The first plant, in the South African West Cape town of Atlantis, already has 300 employees. Eventually the plant is expected to have 1200 employees producing as many as 400,000 TVS and 400,000 refrigerators annually.
Winde said Hisense is now increasing its focus on marketing mobile products, such as tablet computers, in South Africa. Future Hisense factories in South Africa could be for the production of such mobile devices.
