A number of models of dehumidifiers manufactured by China's Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai are the subject of a stop sale notice in the United States.

The units were distributed in the United States by MJC America or Gree USA under brand names SoleusAir or Kenmore.

The notice on the SoleusAir website said that the company received consumer reports of the dehumidifier units overheating, emitting smoke, or catching fire. "We are currently investigating the issue in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)," the statement said.

The notice asks retailers to stop selling the listed models, remove them from store shelves, and return them. Details are in the notice on the website at: www.soleusair.com.

The notice instructs retails to not dispose of or destroy potentially affected dehumidifiers that are returned by consumers.

The notice gives the following details about the affected dehumidifiers:
* manufactured during the period of 2010 to 2012,
* distributed under either the SoleusAir or Kenmore brands
* 25 pint, 30 pint, 45 pint, 50 pint, and 70 pint sizes

Affected models, reference numbers, and batch numbers are found in the notice on the website at: www.soleusair.com.

One of the affected models, the Soleus Air SG-DEH-70-2 dehumidifier, had been rated as a CR Best Buy by Consumer Reports magazine. Because of the stop-sale notice, the magazine removed the dehumidifier, and two other Soleus Air models affected by the stop sale, from the magazine's ratings of dehumidifiers.
