The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) honored several industry leaders during the AHAM annual member meeting, which had the theme of Scaling New Heights and was held April 28-29, 2013, in Washington, DC. Industry leaders were honored for their contributions and leadership to the home appliance industry and to AHAM.
The Home Appliance Industry Leadership (HAIL) Award was presented to Mike McCrea, Senior Vice President of Canadian Operations, Mabe Canada, and to Cheri Wright, Director of Marketing, Kaz, Inc.
McCrea has been a leader in the appliance industry in Canada for several decades, and last year played a critical role in establishing AHAM Canada, which created a single home appliance trade association representing the industry in the U.S. and Canada.
Wright is involved in AHAM's Portable Appliance Division and has championed AHAM's Air Cleaner Certification Program for 10 years. In addition to chairing the Air Cleaner Certification Task Force, she also oversaw the development of the new AHAM Verifide mark, which was launched last year.
AHAM's Michael C. Thompson Public Policy Award is presented to a recipient who demonstrates extraordinary effort and accomplishment in the area of public policy. This year's recipient was Ric Erdheim, Senior Counsel, Philips Electronics. Erdheim has been an advocate for the portable appliance industry, where he focuses on sustainability issues. He has been a major contributor on issues such as battery charger energy regulations, extended producer responsibility legislation, and mercury legislation.
The AHAM Distinguished Service Award recognizes significant contributions by virtue of longevity and quality of service to AHAM and the home appliance industry. This year the award was presented to Wayne P. Klug, Principal Engineer, Dishwasher Technology, Whirlpool Corp. and Ken Lee, Director, Global Product Standards, Bissell Inc.
Klug has volunteered his time to AHAM for over a decade and has been active in the development of performance standards for dishwashers at the U.S. and international levels. He currently serves on the AHAM Dishwasher Verification Task Force.
Lee has been a longtime representative of the floor care industry on several committees of ASTM International, where he has advocated for representative performance testing and consensus standards development of floor care appliances. He currently serves on AHAM's Floor Care Division Board and Engineering Council.
AHAM awarded the Chairman's Partnership Award to the Association of Home Equipment Educators (AHEE). The award was accepted by AHEE President, Joanne Bankston, Ph.D., State Extension Specialist for Family Economics and Management and Interim Chair, Division of Family and Consumer Sciences at the Kentucky State University. Established in 1995, the award recognizes significant contributions to the association by non-member organizations, companies, and individuals.
AHAM recognized Boma Brown-West of Whirlpool Corp. with the Emerging Leader Award. This award, created in 2009, honors achievement and encourages continued service and industry leadership in AHAM activities.
The 2014 AHAM annual member meeting will take place May 2-3, 2014 at the Boca Raton Resort & Spa in Boca Raton, Florida.
