The Dow Chemical Company was identified in the field of Energy and Materials as one of 2013's 50 Disruptive Companies, MIT Technology Review's annual list of the world's most innovative technology companies. Dow was named for commercializing the Powerhouse Solar Shingle, a first-of-its kind solar roofing shingle that serves as a solar energy collector.

Honorees are nominated by MIT Technology Review's editors, who look for companies that have demonstrated original and valuable technology over the last year, bringing that technology to market at significant scale, and clearly influencing their competitors.

For homeowners needing a new roof, Powerhouse provides a replacement option designed to pay for itself, generate revenue through energy offset, and add to home value. Homebuyers purchasing and financing a new home with a Powerhouse roof can generate immediate savings, Dow said, and be cash-flow positive from year one.

"The pace at which technology changes is astounding. This issue celebrates organizations at the forefront, displaying disruptive innovation that will prove to surpass the competition, transform an industry, and change our lives," said Jason Pontin, publisher and editor in chief of MIT Technology Review.

"This pioneering product is reinventing the roof by turning it into a source of value for the homeowner," said Jane Palmieri, Vice President of Dow Solar. "Builders now have the opportunity to differentiate their high-performing homes with a solar product that does not compromise the home's overall aesthetics. In addition, a simplified installation process allows roofing professionals to participate in the growing solar marketplace, which is a real game-changer for the industry."

The shingles are made in the United States and come with a 20 year performance warranty
