The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) commended the administration for including in its FY2014 budget measures aimed at the promotion of energy-efficiency efforts in the public and private sectors.

The budget "encourages States to cut energy waste with a Race-to-the-Top challenge to cut energy waste and modernize the grid...enhances preparedness and resilience... (and) invests in repairing our existing infrastructure and building the infrastructure of tomorrow, including...power grids that are resilient to future extreme conditions." The budget also calls for making permanent "important tax incentives for...energy efficiency."

"NEMA welcomes the emphasis on energy efficiency," said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis. "Currently, the U.S. wastes more energy than it consumes. Greater energy efficiency will boost economic productivity and competitiveness, enhance U.S. energy security, mitigate power outages, and reduce emissions."

NEMA said it looks forward to working with the administration and Congress to:
* boost energy efficiency in government buildings through greater utilization of Energy Savings Performance Contracts that deploy technologies to cut federal energy use at no cost to taxpayers
* enact tax incentives to encourage retrofitting of commercial buildings with lighting, sensors, controls, and integrated systems that can transform older inefficient buildings into high-performance buildings
* create incentives for investment in high-tech equipment to improve industrial energy efficiency which will boost productivity and competitiveness
* speed up deployment of a 21st century Smart Grid that isolates problems and repairs them remotely, enabling quick and resilient recovery from extreme weather outages and cyberattacks.
