January Steel Shipments Up 9.7% from December Mar 20, 2013

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,210,726 net tons in January 2013, up 9.7% from the previous months' 7,483,120 net tons, according to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute.

AISI data released in mid-March showed that January 2013 shipments were down 3.4% from the 8,497,932 net tons shipped in January 2012.

January 2013 shipments were 2% higher than the 2012 monthly average of 8.0 million net tons and was the highest monthly shipment tonnage since August 2012's 8.4 million tons.

Comparing January 2013 shipments to December 2012 shows that:
* cold rolled sheet was up 15%
* hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip were up 12%
* hot rolled sheet was up 1%
