Metal shipments in January 2013 were down somewhat from January 2012 in both the United States and Canada.
U.S. metals service centers shipped 3.6 million tons of steel products in January 2013, down 2.1% from January 2012. Steel product inventories at the end of January 2013 were 8.7 million tons, down 0.4% from January 2012 and up 2.2% from December 2012. At current shipping rates, this is 2.4 months of supply, up 1.8% from January 2012.
U.S. metals service centers shipped 126,100 tons of aluminum products in January 2013, down 5.6% from January 2013. Inventories of aluminum products at the end of January 2013 were 366,400 tons, down 2.1% from January 2012 and up 0.2% from December 2012. This is 2.9 months of supply, up from 3.7% from January 2012.
Canadian metals service centers shipped 522,300 tons of steel products in January 2013, down 6.9% from January 2012. Steel inventories were 1.8 million tons, up 5.7% from January 2013 and down 3.2% from December 2012. This is 3.4 months of supply, up 13.5% from January 2012.
Canadian metals service centers shipped 13,600 tons of aluminum products in January 2013, down 3.0% from January 2012. Inventories of aluminum products were 40,700 tons at the end of the month, up 19.2% from January 2012 and up 5.0% from December 2012. This is 3.0 months of supply, up 22.9% from January 2012.
