In advance of International Energy Saving Day--March 5th, 2013--the CEO of BSH has reminded buyers how much energy can be saved by buying energy efficient appliances.

Dr. Kurt-Ludwig Gutberlet, CEO of German-based BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeraete GmbH has said that a European household fully equipped with super-efficient appliances can expect to save about 300 euros in electricity costs annually. He pointed out that, "Modern BSH home appliances nowadays consume up to 73% less electricity than comparable appliances 15 years ago."

The energy efficiency class, posted n the label of European appliances, helps consumers determine just how environmentally friendly the appliance actually is. European white goods appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers include an EU energy label with color-coded energy efficiency classes.

One example of the difference between the classes: a refrigerator in the top energy efficiency class A+++ uses half as much electricity as an appliance with a class A+.

BSH is one of the biggest producers of major home appliances in Europe and worldwide. The company created a portfolio of its most efficient appliances in 2009.

This portfolio contains only the most economical appliances available in their class and the list is updated on a yearly basis. Calculated over their service life, appliances from the 2011 super efficiency portfolio offer savings of about 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours. This equates to the average annual electricity consumption of around half a million households in Germany.

BSH said numerous appliances appear among the top-scoring products on a recently published German Energy Agency (dena) database of the most energy-efficient home appliances. BSH-produced appliances under its Bosch and Siemens brand names share the top spot for washing machines and dryers. The dishwasher list is also topped by BSH-made appliances sold under the Bosch, Siemens, and Neff brand names in Europe.

BSH, advance of International Energy Saving Day, also described its efforts to conserve resources during manufacturing. BSH's goal is to reduce, by 2015, its global consumption of resources that are not product-related by 25% in production, logistics, and administration. This includes all forms of energy, water, and other fluids such as oils, greases, and chemicals, as well as solid materials such as paper, plastics and metals. BSH said the company is already well on the way to meeting this goal.

Among the keys to BSH's success:

* It is using transportation concepts and is increasingly transferring goods transportation from road to rail. This helped BSH Logistics reduce CO2 emissions by 11% in 2012 alone.
* At its Traunreut location in Upper Bavaria BSH opened a container terminal, which eliminates the need for approximately 9,000 truck journeys annually.
* As part of the company's sustainable logistics concept, the refrigerator factory in Giengen in Baden-Wuerttemberg has begun transporting its appliances in long trucks.
* Attention is also given to recycling energy for heating buildings, and photovoltaic systems on factory grounds are used to produce environmentally friendly electricity.
* Through numerous steps to optimize systems and buildings, the vacuum cleaner factory in Bad Neustadt succeeded in reducing its overall energy consumption by 23% since 2006.
