Toshiba Appliance Sales Down 2% in First Nine Months Feb 7, 2013

Toshiba's (Tokyo) Home Appliances business segment had net sales of 431.7 billion yen (approx. US$4.6 billion) in the first nine months of fiscal year 2012 (April-December 2012. That put the nine-month period down 2%, or 9.2 billion yen, from the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Toshiba Home Appliances operating income was 0.8 billion yen in the nine month period, down 6.0 billion yen from the same period in the previous year.

The segment's air-conditioning business recorded higher overseas sales. The segment's Lighting business also reported higher sales, primarily in LEDs.

In the White Goods business, nine-month sales were lower in home laundry equipment and refrigerators. The company noted, however, that third quarter sales were actually higher than in the third quarter of the previous year.

Higher LED lighting sales could not offset lower white goods appliance sales, which led to an overall nine-month decrease in the Home Appliances segment's operating income.
